26th October 2015 | Monday

We woke up around 6.30am and had to rush everything especially packing our luggage, eager to start our day in Manhattan! Suzanne was already awake and was using the washroom, so we packed our stuffs and prepared our outfits for the day.

We called a car via Lyft and started our journey to our next homestay near Manhattan Bridge at South Street. While on our way, we were caught in traffic. Just outside my side window, the Barclays Center really caught my attention, it's a beautiful structure. The driver was very friendly too, he's an African and has settled down in NY for about 7 years. Being a Lyft  driver for several months, he said that he was earning a living just by being a full time for Lyft. I got astonished as this is not possible in Malaysia, NY seems to be the 'life'.

As we arrived our destination, we met our host, Lisamariel for the very first time, she is very welcoming as she greeted us into the building. According to her, the place we were currently staying was an old apartment that's recently renovated. Place was neat and as shown in Airbnb. After dropping our luggage, off we go to explore New York!

This is a basketball court alley located just behind the apartment as we walk our way towards the East Broadway [F] subway.

Katz's Corned Beef Hot Sandwich
Price : $18.95
Taste : 9/10

One of the well known eateries, Katz's Delicatessen is a must go for breakfast/brunch! We ordered the Corned Beef Hot Sandwich and was blown away, it tasted so good! I'm quite sure it wasn't because of our hunger that it tasted good, the corned beef was so fresh and hot! Pickles and cucumbers were fresh too, you can hear the crunchy sounds we make as we munch them. I actually thought of ordering another since we shared for this sandwich, but the portion was big enough for the both of us.

I also find this place interesting where we got served a slice of the corned beef for tasting after making the order at the counter. As for the drink, Iris was so into Dr Pepper's but we had Dr Brown's cream soda instead, it tasted similar. When we first arrived, the queue wasn't that long, but it got longer as we were almost finishing our meal. We were fortunate that we got ahead of time before the place had a long queue.

Next stop, Flatiron Building!

The Flatiron Building in Flatiron District. So iconic, the district is bustling with people.

Moving forward, the High Line!

The High Line is really an eye opener, it's a great project! The place is an aerial green way, filled with greens and pretty flowers. It was about 2km long but it didn't feel like one, the place is so scenic that you never feel the tiredness kicking in. We were just busy walking around, taking pictures and enjoying view around us. With the breeze and cold weather, it's a very nice place to walk. There are ongoing events too. I participated in a Microsoft event that was promoting the opening of a Microsoft Store in 5th Avenue. All I had to do was just tweet and I got a free T-shirt but it was too big for me. If only I was just ahead of the line by 1 person, I would have won a 1TB XBox 360, vending machine no like me. Tough luck for me, but it was a bonus to get a free T-shirt, yahoo!

We came across this nice yellow ice cream truck nearby Gansevoort St and decided to try an ice cream. Little did I know that this was a popular ice cream truck until I Googled it. Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream practises traditional ice cream making, no wonder the ice cream feels sort of 'old school', you know it when you taste its texture. We ordered Earl Grey ice cream, very authentic taste. Certain ice cream nowadays tend to be milky or creamy, this is not. I never savored any Earl Grey ice cream before in Malaysia too, so this is rather special to me. Come to think of it, we actually skipped lunch and only had this as we had a busy day of exploring the city. We were looking for Melt Bakery or Standard Biergarten right after finishing our walk in High Line but they were nowhere to be seen.

Trivia : Found out that they have a sister branch called Restaurant Selamat Pagi, haha. To think that they would be serving Malaysian dishes, I was wrong, they serve Indonesian dishes instead.
